In 2015, Germany passed a new law which allows consumer associations and qualified NGOs to file privacy class actions. Under this new instrument, qualified NGOs will have the standing to file for injunctions against any data privacy violation affecting consumers in a broad spectrum of cases. It is also expected that the topic of collective redress will not be discussed until the federal elections in 2017.

TPLF has been in Germany for some time, focused on large commercial and group actions. The Hausfeld law firm announced in October that it entered into a joint venture with Burford Capital for ‎€30 million to fund competition law claims in Germany. There are similar efforts by other players around the issues involving Volkswagen.
