  • Business Groups Sound Alarm On Proposal That Could Make EU "A Major Global Hub For Abusive Litigation"
April 13, 2018

Corporate Counsel details the response by business groups to a new EU proposal released this week that could lead to a class action lawsuit system that is as bad or worse than the U.S. The article quotes U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform President Lisa Rickard as saying that while well intentioned, “this proposal could make the EU a major global hub for abusive litigation,” and that it “lacks critical safeguards.”

Business Europe, a Brussels-based industry association, also spoke out, warning of abusive litigation under the proposal. Markus Beyrer, director general of the group, cautioned, “Strong legal safeguards are part of Europe’s legal tradition in which frivolous compensation claims can be efficiently prevented.” He continued, “EU collective redress would only enrich law firms.”
